A threaded rod passes through inserts in the front and back of the frame, and traps the FB carriage cross beam to allow adjustment of the carriage assembly. Double stick tape holds the FB for routering. The FB turned out very even, with one small ridge from taking too wide a pass. Total cost was about $16 for the aluminum angle, threaded rod, bolts and washers and threaded inserts. All the plywood was from the scap pile, and the crank handle was a replacement for my old thickness planer. Ooops! Posted in wrong order. Sorry. See part 1 for construction details. Great jig, Alex! I think I've seen the same belt sanding jig somewhere. Do you think it's feasible to make your design with adjustable radii by having different index pins/holes for the pivots? Glenn |

I think you could, Glenn, but the pivot points would need to be able to slide up and down, while the table that the FB blank sits on remains in the same position. Where the dowel rod is kept in place on my jig at the correct angle would have to be made adjustable, maybe something like a universal or knuckle joint. Take a look at Mario Proulx's web site. I saw his jig first, but didn't figure out the way it worked until I saw the wide belt sander version. I think Mario's has some sort of uni joint, but I don't know if it is adjustable. A big thanks to Grumpy for pointing me in the right direction! Alex |
