Post subject:  Binding an ebony fingerboard

I am binding my ebony fingerboard using the "plastic" ivoroid Martin binding. The issue is the duco cement will not adhere to the ebony. It sticks just fine to the binding but peals right off of the fingerboard. Any suggestions on what glue I should try? I had no issues with the duco when applying the binding to the headstock or the rosewood/sitka body.

I believe that for ABS Weld on makes a good cement for this. They make several versions or formulas so hopefully someone can tell you exactly which one would work. Or you can check the Stew Mac cat. They sell it there but I picked mine up from Home Depot when I needed it.

Take a look at ROO glue.

Mark,
I looked at the Roo Glue and it sounds promising. I ordered a bottle and will give it a try when it arrives.

Thanks!

When I bound the ebony f/b and headstock on my F5 mando I used CA.

Freeman, were you using ivoroid or wood binding. If you were using the ivoroid, did you notice any swelling or distortion of the binding from the reaction of the CA?

I use medium thick CA for ivoroid on ebony fingerboards. No problems with swelling or staining the binding. I tried the thin stuff once but it wicks into the fret slots too much for me. Thicker is easier to control

My Roo Glue finally arrived. I will give it a try tomorrow. If that doesn't do it, Medium CA it is. Thanks for the input guys!

Roo Glue did the trick. Very easy to work with and created a great bond! I scraped and sanded the binding and it stayed right in place. Thanks for the help guys!

Glad it worked for you. As you know it is formulated just to bind plastic to wood.
