I need to replace the 3-way switch on my ES-175 clone. I used a SM switch that's been troublesome. It required a 1/2" hole. I purchased a 3-way switch meant for a les paul, but it does not have enough threads for my 1/8" top. I think it is meant to be used with the rubber grommet. How big of a hole does the grommet need? Not sure if I should modify to handle this switch or try to find a different one?

They never used any grommets. I would find a switch with a longer threaded area rather than modifying the guitar. The standard threaded length seems to be 5/16".

You can get a deep threaded nut from mojo that drops into the hole to allow enough thread
