Ok you hard rockers out there I have just scored a pretty darn nice LP body, Flamed maple top mahogany back and sides. (unfinished body with Vintage Gibson neck pocket) my brother in LA found it at an estate sale the wife told him that this body was special ordered form Gibson’s custom shop in the early seventies for her husband. I know no more than that other than Gibson is stamped in the neck pocket.

But anyway I will be building a instrument with this body I have use several versions of Humbuckers in the past but thought I would try some thing different on this project.

I have my eye on a set of Texas Barbeque's but I have never used them before. Has any one built with them and if not what pickup do you suggest for the late 70’s rock sound (ie Skinard-ish to ZZ sound)

I know I will need at least 500K pots but are 1M pots really worth the extra money?

Sounds like a great find!

This place should help you with all things LP.

Mr. Payne,

I am installing a set of Texas BBQ humbuckers on a guitar right now, made for a guy in Texas! He told me to put whatever in it that I wanted, so I went with a whole Texas theme - Texas colors, feels, and "gritty" sound...so we will see...I will let you know what I learn with them.

As far as pot choice, that all depends on what you want. Obviously, the broader the resistance range the more "wide open" your guitar can be. I would say that using the 500K pots would be more than adequate, and more fitting of the classic Texas tone - which I believe is a little smoother than the really bright open feel you might get with the 1 Mohm pots. What you might try is putting in a lower value cap on the bridge tone, like a 0.022 uF as opposed to the tradition 0.047 uF, to ensure that you don't quite roll off so many of the trebs...It might get you a little brighter grittier tone without swinging too far in that direction...

But that being said, I am speaking entirely qualitatively...

Hope that helps,
Stephen

If you crave the ZZ sound you might want to start with a Duncan Pearly Gates in the bridge and a 59 in the neck,a classic combo. Also if you want an old PAF sound look into Wolfetone pickups.I have some custom winds he did for me ,great work!
On another tangent try a P Rails by Duncan ,very nice.
