Hello all, this is my first scratch build from the pile of wood sitting in the corner of my dusty shop. I've worked for a major guitar and bass manufacturer for a number of years and am now a full time instrument repair person. I figured it was about time to make something with all the bells and whistles I wanted for myself. I wanted to thank everyone here for the info I've gathered to help weave me around the pitfalls I was most likely to encounter due to the improv nature of this build. And a special thanks to Steve Tripplett and Peter Yelda for their help and shop use. So this guitar consists of the following: Body: Sapele (mostly hollow except for block under bridge and control cavity walls) Top: Black Walnut Neck: Flamed Myrtle Fretboard: E.I. Rosewood Headstock/tenon veneers and control cover: Claro Walnut Burl Fret Marker and Tenon inlays: Padauk Bridge: Hipshot non-trem Tuners: Schaller locking Pickups: Seymour Duncan-neck: P-rails, bridge- Pearly Gates Mounting Rings are Seymour Duncan Triple Shot rings (small switches for series/parallel/coil splitting) Tung Oil Finish 25.5" scale length 14"-16" compound radius fretboard Buzz Feiten Tuning System Setup w/ .011-.050 pure nickel DR's Overall I'm happy with the way it turned out. I'll definitely do a few things differently the next time around...like planning it out maybe. Thanks Again! and sorry for the crap-errific photography skills. -Ray Hughes |

I really like this guitar. It's simple, unique, and understated and you kind of let the beauty of the wood speak for itself. Love the tung finish. I'm also a big fan of fretboards with no inlays. I do have a question though: what is the purpose of the large cavity under the neck pickup? I'm sure it's something simple I'm missing, but I can't for the life of me figure out what it's for. |
