Post subject:  Can I use lacquer clear coat over paint?

Hi,
I'm on my way in the a.m. to pick up the two colors for my first electric guitar build, and I'm worried about what to buy. I decided on using McFadden clear gloss, and I am unsure if I can use a lacquer over paint (oil-based or enamel).

I experienced in the past a mistake when I tried to use brushed lacquer over spray lacquer, and wanted to avoid a similar mistake.

Will the lacquer react with the paint, or do I need to go with black spray lacquer? My primary color is black, with a bit of a silver burst in it.

Thank you all for the helpful tips and answers on my previous two questions.

One strategy is to go to an autobody supply shop and get them to sell you what you need. Most of them can mix just about any shade you want and put it in an aerosol can. (They can also 'scan' a guitar to match the color.)
Black should be pretty straightforward, and they can sell you some sort of clear coat as well.

Cheers
John

Carl I can assure you that lacquer over enamel will cause the enamel to lift and seperate! :o laughing6-hehe Old commercial line in case you don't know what I meant.

The solvents in the lacquer will melt the enamel substrate and casue it to wrinkle to the point of ruin!

[hijack]Lift & separate. Yea... good stuff.

Anymore, I think I'd rather have everything all together.[/hijack]
