Official Luthiers Forum!

Assuming that my knowledge of luthier..ing is rudimentary at best, where should I start? What should I learn? Assuming that I intended to study the art, what courses/subjects would I be expected to learn? Which would I benefit from? I'm sort of following in my father's footsteps on this one, and I'd greatly appreciate any help than any of you could offer.

at the beginning if you are interested , do some research on basic building and buy a kit . There are a world of questions , do u have a woodworking shop? what experience do u have ? can you afford lessons at a class? Depending on the answers to several questions i would take a class , and build a kit. NOW keep in mind this is from a novice that started in at designing his own stuff from the get go

I'm assuming you're talking about electric guitars?

I'm finishing my first one, i'll play it next week. If I had some suggestions to you, would be these ones:

First, get a plan, or study some, try to understand and learn how all is working, how the pieces are assembled, how the cavities are connected, etc, etc. If you want to go with an original project, DRAW a plan. It gives you the chance to visualize your work and get away from some errors.

There's a lot of things you have to think about while building a guitar. Woodworking, obviously. Electronics (you can find pre-wired stuff, diagrams, etc, but it's good to learn the basics of electric and know how all this stuff is going. So you can make better choices.) There's also a lot of maths, for all the ajustments, the scale lenght, the neck, strings and pick ups heights, etc, etc.

Just take the time to foresee al the steps of your build, and after, build. Just build, and make mistakes anyway . That's the best way to learn. I know what i'm talking about!!
