Post subject:  Neck Angle Question

When doing neck angle. Do you have to hand plane and/or sand the very top of the guitar from the bridge to the neck joint to match the angle of the neck heel? I saw a thread where someone was planing the top of their Les Paul style guitar for neck angle. But I always thought this was just accomplished through the heel of the neck, not the top of the body too.

On Les Paul Guitars, the tenon is not the full width of the fretboard and the underside of the fretboard sits directly on the top surface of the body.
So the surface of the body has to match the neck angle(up to the neck pickup route) to avoid having gaps between fretboard and body

I generally put a 'primary' angled plane from the bridge to the edge of the body in, but that's not the neck angle. That simply re-estabilshes the 'flat' area, and you still need a neck angle after that. The 'primary' plane means the carve looks smoother/more elegant all the way around the body, otherwise you end up with a very thick bit of maple at the neck end.
