Post subject:  Question about Seagrave (Mcfadden) vynal sealer

I just recieved my shipment of seagrave (mcfadden) laquer and vynal sealer from luthier mercantile and I think there is a problem. I'm new to finishing and was experimenting with a viscosity cup to help me select a gun/tip setup. I measured pure alcohol for transtinted dyes, laquer and vynal sealer. The transtinted alcohol was low on the scale and the laquer was more than twice as viscose. The vynal sealer was a different answer than I was expecting. It was only 3 seconds longer, 13 vs 10, than pure alcohol with the laquer coming in at 24 secends. I figured it would be thicker than the laquer as my Jeff Jewitt book recommeds thinnig the sealer 50/50. I email lmii and there looking into this. I would like to use the laquer this weekend but im a little hesitant. My only reference on this subject is my stewmac spray finishing dvd where the behlen vynal sealer looked like honey and needed to be thinned to use. This sealer is as thin as solvent. I'm thinkin it is mismarked. Any thoughts?

My vinyl sealer in the past has been thin enough to spray with no thinner. Try it on a piece of scrap.

I heard back from lmii and there sure it is sealer. I will give it a shot and see what happens. I was hoping to do my first finish with sealer and laquer only on a grain filled ash body. Now I don't think the 1.4 tip el cheapo gun I was looking to experiment with has a tip small enough to spray the sealer.

It will spray fine just turn the needle in to back off the fluid. You are not worrying about a beautiful finish with the sealer just getting coverage. I personally seal with shellac before the lacquer and spray Behlens lacquer straight from the can with a .8 tip on a cheap hvlp touch up/sill gun.
