i found a place where if wanted i could buy a ivory nut, is it worth it? does it sound better than bone or graphite?

Having installed many ivory nuts I can tell you that if you are doing just the nut on an electric guitar it's not better, and if you use mammoth ivory, it'll wear out faster as the material is brittle.
I prefer walrus tusk ivory, although on electrics I use bone.

If you replace all the components on an acoustic guitar, however, (nut, saddle, bridge pins) there is a significant improvement over bone.

Opinions may vary, but professional musicians with much better ears than I have corroborated my opinion, so in my mind, it's settled.

And, even with "legal" ivory, you won't be able to cross internationnal lines with your guitar.

That's right.

You can go wherever with "fossilized" ivory, but pre-ban "legal" ivory must be certified, must have been documented as bein within the US borders as of the date of the ban, and cannot leave the US in any form.
