I have a guitar im building and i wanna get a nice, clear finish (well.. thinking about it anyways..) is there anything i could use that wouldn't dampen the sound of the guitar itself?]

or something to really bring out the tone

dude i'll be honest with you just as i have viewed some of the different posts that you have had a round here i think you are just worrying way to much about the affect of different things on the tone, not that you shouldnt be worried about tone, but on an electric guitar you are never going to notice a tone difference between one finish and another unless you have wizard ears which im pretty sure dont exist. not t mention the whole point of a solid body IS to dampen vibration, vibration=feedback, thats why they started making them. if this is you're first guitar there are much bigger things to worry about for tone, get good pickups, a solid neck joint, and do a good job of wiring, those things will matter a lot more, get them down and put whatever kinda finish you want on it, your not going to notice a difference from one to the other except in appearance. just my 2c.

I'd disagree slightly with Filippo - it does make a slight difference on an electric...but not a huge one (like getting the neck angle right does..!). A nice thin satin finish lets stuff ring out a little longer & louder.

With that said, people will accept a great looking finish every single time over a mediocre one that sounds better about 95% of the time.
