first off: Hello, all! I was directed to this forum as a resource for all things luthiery by a friend and that everybody on here is really helpful and friendly. alright, so my actual question (which I feel like I know the answer to) are there 5 Meg ohm pots out there? And if there are, would anybody actually want to use them? I ask this because I had a customer come in today and ask if we could get him a replacement 5 meg pot for his dying 5 meg pot in his American shop RG he had brought in with him. I was confused and consulted a few sources to humor the guy and couldn't find any source for these seemingly mythological 5 meg beast before I apologized and sent him on his way. I suppose I could have checked the pot on my multimeter to check the validity to his claim but I didn't think to before he left. He claimed "his old guitar tech that I can't get ahold of anymore" ordered them directly from DiMarzio but I couldn't find anything on their website about them. ... so am I gravely mistaken? is this sketchy coked up dude (lots of nose wipin' and fast talkin') running 5 meg pots on his humbuckers? thanks, Josh |

Seems like all you are dealing with here is a guy who found a "cool", non-accurate way to describe a 500K pot. What possessed anyone to conflate computer and electronic jargon is beyond me. |

Alright, thanks for the confirmation. I'm hoping this dude doesn't come back because I feel like it'll be hard as hell to educate him. |

I'm with Zlurgh, I think he's trying to say 500k pots. The RG's(I'm assuming Ibanez RG series) as far as I know uses standard value pots that are normally used in guitar circuits. I'd explain this to him ONCE. If he can't get it through his head, tell him to move on. I suspect his old tech simply humored him his "quaint" ways of speaking, and went ahead and put 500k pots in. That is what I would do. MHO. |
