Post subject:  Spin-A-Split coil tapping question

Hey folks, I've got a question regarding what kind of pots to use for the so called "spin-a-split" wiring. Basically what it entails is using a regular tone pot to split a humbucker, so that you can dial all the way from fully humbucking to fully single coil. I've looked at a lot of different forums, and there seem to be a lot of differing opinions. Some folks say to use 500k pots, some say 1m pots; some say you need linear taper while others suggest audio-taper. Needless to say, I'm getting confused.

My guitar is going to have two humbuckers and a single coil in the middle, one main volume and two tone controls (one for each humbucker), a switch that switches between the two humbuckers, and a switch that throws the single coil in/out of phase. I have an old Peavey Horizon II which has this setup, where the tone controls dial in the coil-splitting. At 10, the pickup is fully single coil, around 7-8 it's humbucking, and anywhere under 7 it functions as a normal tone control for the humbucker.

Any advice?

might i suggest push pull? or even small toggle or slide switches? Guitar fetish has them cheap and though i cannot directly support them they have gotten good reviews.

I don't know if they can do what you are asking for, but guitarelectronics.com will make custom wiring diagrams. You can tell them what you want and see if they can draw it up for you.

Pots are cheap so you can afford to experiment here. I'd try a 500K audio taper pot first. The taper won't be perfectly smooth but will probably be smoother than a linear taper pot.
