If you guys were to buy templates, would you rather have 1/2 - 3/4" plywood or 1/4" lexan and pay the increase in price for lexan? |

For what, drawing outlines or routing templates for body shapes and cavity routes? If drawing, I like the clear templates, for routing, I like to draw the outline with a clear template, then use a wood template as the bearing guide. |

Thicker than 1/4", though. That's not much for the bearing to ride on. |

Buy the 1/2" plywood template. Use it to make a 3/4" plywood (or MDF) copy to use as a routing template and a 1/4" acrylic (plexiglass) copy to lay on your work piece to find the most appealing grain. When you mess up your routing template, you will have the original to make a new one. Steve |

Layout? Acrylic. Routing? Trespa (phenolic), which I can usually pick up cheap or free at building sites. Scraps are big enough for full guitar templates, and it is tough as nails. Do not need transparent templates for routing, as indexing off scribed centrelines (or indexing points) works just fine. |
