The creative bug has been nibbling me steadily since I finished the mili-tele, so I wanted to get going with another build. Here are the specs on the new one--

-tele style
-chambered alder body with a walnut cap
-creme binding (still mulling it over whether or not to do binding)
-maple neck/fretboard
-rear routed
-P90's with standard tele wiring
-brass half bridge
-black or nickel tuners and input jack (I'm open to suggestions there)

This one will be several months in the making for a couple of reasons:

first reason- money. I'll have to buy my supplies/hardware a little at a time.

second reason - the place where I plan to buy my walnut isn't having a sale in January or February, so I'll have to wait until Spring. It won't be too bad though, because I'll use that time to buy a few things here and there and make progress in other areas.

Since I had some maple on hand, I started on the neck/fretboard today. I'll be using a double action TR, so my fretboard will be separate from the neck, but I'm using maple for both.

I needed to get my fretboard piece down to the correct thickness, so after a few passes on the jointer, I ran it through my version of a thickness sander. I removed the blade from an old plane and clamped it to my BOSS. Then I would just move it closer, a little at a time, to get to the correct dimension.

Finally, a few shots of the mostly-finished neck. I got lucky, and there is some curl to this maple, so I think it'll make a fine looking neck.

Yep, you're right. I never use any PPE when using my sander, so I didn't think about having him use anything. Once I posted the pic, I thought, "yep, he should be wearing something"

Cool use for an old rusty plane, I will keep that idea in the back of my mind, my planes are not rusty but should work just as well.

I've never really thought of my spindle sander as a thickness sander.

I do now, though.

I know, I know...

Got my son into the act, too, Roger. He's a little older than your Sport Model, and I have really only recently begun to allow him access to the power tools (he's 14) and then only under strict supervision. It's a great thing to do and he has learned a lot from the experience, so I recommend it highly. We started out with sanders, the drill press, and then bandsaw, moved into using the router and router tables. I haven't yet turned him loose on the table saw (except for the most simple cuts--typically using a sled or something). The table saw still scares me sometimes.

Yep, I hear ya. This son is my shadow. He wanted a guitar for christmas last year because he figured the best way to get to spend time with dad was to play gutar hehe. I invited him out to help me build this one, and he jumped at the chance. I loved every minute of it and am hoping that he takes an interest. This was the first time he's helped me, so I had him start on something very simple with my help. On the last guitar I built, I had my 11 year old out helping me to hammer in frets. He seemed to enjoy it, but wasn't really interested in helping when I had to fret it again . My 11 year old is a science buff, so I'm hoping to get him interested in electronics... winding pickups maybe

So I've been terrible about updating my build thread here, but I've gotten quite a bit done since the last update...

I've gotten a lot of work done on the neck. I just need to install front and side fret markers, thin the headstock, install tuners, frets, and shape. For the front fret markers I'm going to use walnut. For the side markers I'll use walnut wood putty

I got a lot of work done on the body today. I spent some quality time with the drill press and a forstner bit and got 1/2 of my chambering done. I still need to do some more profile sanding and run it through a planer, but it's getting there.





Building will be grinding to a halt now until I get some funds for more parts. It'll probably be a couple of months until I make any headway

Thanks man. I pretty much need everything else . I still have to track down an acceptable piece of walnut for the top cap, binding, tuners, fret wire, GFS P90's, pots, caps, switch, knobs, input jack, bridge, saddles... Pretty much the only thing I had for this build was the body and neck wood.

I also need to buy a tapered plug cutter so I can make my fret markers. This build is going to be a marathon for sure

regarding fret markers, some of the big home improvement stores sell walnut dowel rods, if you don't mind looking at end grain....
radio shack sells switches(although not "tele" style), 1/4" jacks, capacitors and potentiometers; and people sell Fender branded in line tuners all day for $20-$30 on Craigslist here, for some reason...i think fender tuners are just fine...
i hear ya, it took me a year to get my last electric parts all together

Thanks man. I'll do some checking, but I wanted to go with some quality parts on this one for the electronics. The plug cutter isn't really that expensive (I think woodcraft had one for less than $10), but it's just everything together, ya know?

I did finish up my chambers today. I made then a little deeper as well.
