How difficult is the Afzelia to work? Is it similar to any other woods in terms of workability?

Got lots of ipe scrap if anyone wants to pay shipping...do a couple decks with the stuff and you'll have a lifetime supply. Dulls HSS worse than anigre...lots of silica...crosscut the ends and see some serious glitter...

Patrick what do you use to bolt your necks on? it really is a nice clean look.

At first I was excited that it had some really cool scenery, then it turned into a nasty, dirty porn!

I like the wheel end option on the Hot Rod truss rods from StewMac and have used them. On the other hand, the fattest truss rod in the business is the same thing and I've had issues with the depth required for the truss rod when carving necks. Not enough meat behind the brass block at the 1st fret. One can actually feel the depression being caused by the truss rod when pushing back. I've switched to the Allied Lutherie truss rods which Mark Blanchard designed.

What we really need is for someone to design a pinwheel (like on the Hot Rod) which has a hex stub on the other end. Then one can stick that on any truss rod and get body side adjustments.

Kevin Looker thanks man Afzelia is a wood which turns into powder-like, just like Padauk does... Its not very easy to file and work with because of the interlocking grains however it is very easy to sand, also you must always use very sharp router bits because otherwise it has a tendency to chip... The worst part: It stinks so bad, very hard to describe the smell, however if you do not wear a respiratory mask, your in trouble... The great part is that for some reason it stays totally non-reactive to moisture exchange, I've done several tests and I must say that I am extremely impressed, the timber does indeed stand up to it's reputation! check this out, its in french but I am sure you can use google translator... http://www.pallisco-cifm.com/download/Fiche_Doussie_v1.pdf

The pace where I buy my sapelli is the main ipellia distributor in switzerland... that's a lot of string blocks right there!

I really like that industrial look. Also I like the vintage effect you achieved without resorting to the cheesy beat up look that so many relics have.

wow. thanks for the detailed and informative response patrick. I am looking at a threaded insert/machine screw solution for my current project. I like the idea of counter sunk ferrules.

I either use special screws which are pretty much indestructible (designed for concrete) which go directly into the wood of the neck (I just grind off that part you see on the tips) Or I also use a t-nuts inserts design which I've been doing since 1998, I epoxy them in place like on this picture... the hole being bigger than the actual t-nut gives room for the epoxy to go arround it... The screws are stainless steel and are also indestructible... In both cases, I use a brass surround so that the top of the screw looks nice and cleanely fitted to the body...

But I see what you mean, especially when you want to carve thinner necks, it then becomes a problem... LMII actually offers spoke nuts on their double way truss rod which is thinner then the stewmac rod but they only do that on order, you must contact Chris for that... On the other side, the stewmac rod is perfect because the threads are inserted inside the brass, there is no welding which makes them extremely tough and durable...
