Post subject:  Lap steel...

reading about bending binding - Alan bending bloodwood around a lap steel head- I
thought I'd post about my lap steel.

It was my first "real" build. The only project I'd done before was cutting out a guitar
body and buying everything for it. ( the horn of the double cut Tele style can be seen)

A friend that gave me a long enough board of ash ( he said was swampash-I don't know) inspired
me to build it. I also wanted to give LED's a shot. It was fun and sounds great.

I used copper shielding tape and covered with blue flourescent plexiglass on the back of neck
and the same for board, something like a Tele bridge and cavity control cover.
The fret markings are cut in the top of plexiglass...cutting in bottom didn't work as well.

I knew much of nothing about applying a finish or prepping instrument wood for it and figured
if it played I could backup.

I wired it so it lights when it's plugged in.

I hope it's worth posting for the fun.

Pretty cool. Wish I'd thought of that.

Always like seeing somebody build a lap-steel!
That one would be perfect for playing in a dark club.
I'm curious as to what scale length.
Nice!

Thank you Chris. The steel below helped with ideas.
My dad owned it- it was given to him in '63 and it's
never been played. Still has the original price tag on it.

Alan it's 25.5 - I gassed the first shot and made it 26.5-kept
busting strings ...knew I had messed up. Par for me it seems.
I had also used wire and that was a mess.
