So, as I am doing building & inlays, I find some music I listen to more appealing than other music during this process - I have a cable running from my PC/audio unit/headphone amp, which is piped out to my shop and I currently have approx. 260 GIGS of music, but I do like setting up playlists... anyways, I would LOVE to know what YOU listen to when YOU are building... here's my top 10 list: (ahem, yeah, I like the old stuff!) 1. Pink Floyd 2. ELO 3. Led Zeppelin 4. Leo Kottke 5. Muddy Waters 6. The Hellecasters 7. Steve Vai 8. Joe Satriani 9. Steely Dan 10. Allman Bros. |

I like this place because it's one of the few forums I visit daily that doesn't have a thread like this, or post your best joke, or pic of the day, or.... you get the idea. Sorry to be a grump, but that's my take. |

Glad you could stop by just to add your own personal flair to the thread, Chris ![]() I actually don't listen to anything when I'm building. I find that I have to be very focused, so my mind is completely wrapped up in what I'm doing instead of allowing part of it to be doing something else. I just don't have enough experience to do that yet ![]() |

Sorry to mess up this forum for you Chris - I would remove the post, but I can't now that you responded to it - maybe an administrator can move it to the "Off Topic Discussions" section, so we don't ruin this forum for you. ![]() |

Really people, what world are we living in here? Is this about GUITARS or not??? Hello, is this mic on? The MUSIC we hear is USUALLY filled with guitars - so remember kids, these things you are building, will hopefully play some MUSIC. Have we got so STUFFY that we are being shut down about the music that these guitars create? I actually don't think that I have gone "Off Topic", a joke of the day, a pic of the day or even the "Poem of The Month" I listen to music that goes through me, so therefore, you can consider it one of the MOST important items I keep in my toolbox. I was working on the SW guitar yesterday listening to Jimmy Page and thought "Jimmy would get a kick out of this guitar". Listening to music got me into learning how to play guitar 37 years ago. That journey took me where I am today and without it, I am nothing. Break out your guitars boys, we might need to have a showdown! (Pick a key, any key) Whew, that soap box should have inlay! ![]() |

I put my I-Pod on shuffle, so, a lot of different stuff. When I hear David Lindley, or Steve Kimmock I think "I wish I could sell one of these lap steels to somebody like that". I'm working on that right now! Glad to see you listen to the Allmans! Hey, if I build an amp, could that thread be on here? It's definitely a part of electric git building, no? I mean, what good is and electric without an amp? I've got half the parts already. |

Hey good thread. I accidentally found it while looking for the joke of the day thread. ![]() I do not listen to music when I am building. I usually forget to plug in the crappy clock radio I have in the shop. I got the clock radio to let me know at a glance how long I have been in the shop and neglecting my wife and children. I leave it unplugged to prevent the feelings of guilt I have for being in the shop so much! ![]() |

I'm probably digging myself into a deeper hole, but my point is... I thought we as a group were better than that. I visit a dozen forums a day, and the longest threads are always these same three things. I mean - WTF is up with that? How many joke, picture, and tuneage threads do we need on the fricking net? If I come here, I expect to read about luthiery... not this extraneous stuff. You know... if you want a joke of the day then go to a joke of the day forum (if one exists). You can have all three here if you like - go for it. I just think it cheapens the place. Further... my opinion is as valid as Virgils, so get over it. Rant over. |

RogerC108 wrote: I actually don't listen to anything when I'm building. I find that I have to be very focused, so my mind is completely wrapped up in what I'm doing.... +1. When I'm using power tools, I can't hear it anyway ( and don't get me started about Ipods and their dangling earbud cables. Not good around power tools). And when I'm using hand tools, well, they make a beautiful kind of music all by themselves. I'm perfectly satisfied listening to that. |

*Somebody* listens to Talk Radio whilst building guitars. Ahem. I am so over this too - everyone GET BACK TO WORK! As far as I'm concerned, this thread is over - no more comments anyone - please? |

Chris Pile wrote: If I come here, I expect to read about luthiery... not this extraneous stuff. Then go read the building threads and leave this one alone. Simple as that. Virgil's point, I think, is that the music he listens to while building inspires him. So in my mind, this thread is as relevant as what types of saw blades someone uses. |

I just discovered this last weekend. I got the stanley plane back that was being refurbished for me and was using on a project. You want to talk about enjoyable and relaxing, that's it ![]() |

Roger, yep! There's no better music I can think of than the sound of a well sharpened hand plane in use. Love it. |

Nice Jimmy - I like all of them as well - and really, when I'm doing the crazy cutting, routing, planing, etc, I can't hear the music in the shop because I have sound attenuaters on (For the non veterans/military out there, I'm talking ear protection) I have to listen to music for the inlay, because we are talking hundreds of hours of brain-shattering sawing, sizing, fitting and I don't cheech up so music calms the savage beast! |

Hey, Virgil, that's not a list of OLD stuff. (Well...okay...it's kind of old.) Man, I listen to REALLY old stuff: Charlie Christian, Django, Freddie Green, Eddie Lang, and some of the new boys like Les Paul, Herb Ellis and Barney Kessel. |

Corey Harris, Keb Mo, Mississippi John Hurt, Lonnie Johnson, Sun House, Bob Brozman, Catfish Keith, Derrick Trucks, Seasick Steve, and Jimmy Rodgers have all been playing lately. just closed the box on a 000 and working on molds for a L-00 seems to be inspiring a blues thing. -jd |

I like folkish acoustic fingerstyle music on very lightly in the background while I'm carving braces, but barely there so I can hear the wood pare away. That's a cool combination. Otherwise I don't really listen to much music while I'm building. |
