I am making my first maple fretboard guitar.

Understandably, I want to apply finish on it! I use polyurethane finishes.

I usually fret my boards after they are finished and buffed.

How do I approach this?

Thanks!!!

Fret it first, then scrape the frets afterwards.

I've done it both ways.
I like finishing it after fretting better.

Sometimes the lacquer chipped when fretting afterwards.
It was just easier to scrape a little lacquer from the fret tops every few coats.
Had to do a fret level anyway on refrets or new builds, easy enough to handle the finish then.
