I am installing fretboard side markers on a completed Strat neck. ( Customer is using a right handed neck on a left handed guitar) I know I need a fence of some sort to maintain a uniform line. What are you guys using? Pics? |

I laid out some tape, measured carefully, and drilled carefully to install the dots. Had my apprentice spot me to make sure I was perpendicular to the neck. Took an hour. |

I just measure for the center of each side fret area and use something fine to make an impression (I often just use a wood screw) and then put the neck in a drill press vice and drill each centered indent. My side dots are usually 3/32" from the neck/fretboard seam. |

Yup, that's pretty much it. Cept I never used a drill press, just marked em with a punch and drilled carefully. Worked for me, seem pretty straight. |

I believe the fence is most usefull when against the back of bound but not yet installed fingerboards, keeping the dot drilling in line & a fixed distance (I use .100") from the underside. (This is not necessarily centered vertically in a constant radius fingerboard, as the edge thickness changes). I always found slight wandering the issue, so I now use 3/32" twist drill I ground into a sharp brad-point that I use just for this. Keeping a neck rigid while drilling is more important than a fence once the neck is together IMO, since the drill line doesn't remain a constant distance from anything "fenceable" anymore, unless you register off the frets. |
