Post subject: | Tele neck with Humbucker bridge pickup dilema |
I mixed a Neovin high output Tele neck pickup with a Power rail bridge pickup. They are wired in parallel through a selector switch. Both center taps go to a push pull pot. The Tele pickup sounds muffled, selecting both gives a thin shrieking high end, and bridge only sounds like a humbucker bridge should. I am using a Gibson style bridge with a 12" radius. The Tele pickup pole pieces are past the top and last string, so these two strings are muffled. Also, the radius of the Tele pickup is smaller than 12" I have decided to risk ruining my finished guitar and route the neck pickup cavity to fit a humbucker. I have a normal humbucker pair I would like to use. Before I proceed, would it be worth trying a different wiring setup? Basically, I was trying for a Fender and Gibson sound on the same guitar. I suspect some of my problem may be using the high impedance overwound pickups. Thanks for suggestions, Dan |

I would rewire it very simply, without coil taps, and maybe just from the pickups to an output jack, and hear how it sounds. I have a problem guitar that I tried rewiring differently 6 times, and it still ain't right. I'm guessing it's because one pup is a high output humbucker, and the other is a p-90 type. Seems like it should work though. I went with 2 vol pots, and 1 tone, no switch. Maybe that's why it doesn't work properly. It does sound good though. The tone pot acts weird. Good luck! |

Thanks Alan, I measured the tele pickup at 7.6k ohms and the bridge at 16k ohms. Quite a mis-match. I'm going to try swapping the bridge PU with a normal humbucker. I had a thought of using a busted or cheap guitar as a test bench. I could route a large area to temporarily place pickups, and buld a universal control panel, maybe with terminal blocks to allow quick wiring test changes as well as pickup combos. It's a real pain to replace and rewire a pickup on a finished guitar. Dan |
