archtop guitar tailpiece made out of cedar?? it sounds interesting... what are your thoughts, has it been done and where...

I think Cedar splits to easily and is to soft to hold the string tension.

If I had to guess, just before it explodes the string buttons would pull right through.

Both of these respondents have it down cold. If you're contemplating this, make your true tailpiece out of metal and then wrap it in cedar so it appears to be all natural wood. Not so hard to do. But don't rely on cedar alone to carry the stress load for you. I'm pretty sure it would fail catastrophically on you before you even got your strings up to pitch.

its just an idea that popped into my head... i usually use ebony, rosewood or figured maple for my tailpieces.
