Post subject:  Lesson in Minwax Wipe On Poly

I have read a lot about this wipe on poly for maple necks and thought I would give it a try. I have a neck that I have prepared for nitro with sanding sealer and decided that with the weather in my area it would be a while before I could shoot nitro (ventilation). I was thinking about doing Tru Oil but since there is sanding sealer on the neck I was worried about the oil not penitrating. So what about this Minwax Wipe on Poly? Has anyone out there used it and will it work with sanding sealer? What is your technique?

I would worry about ANYTHING underneath it. It took some time before I got it to work predictably on bare wood. I wouldn't presume to suggest it was going to work over any substrate material without testing it thoroughly.

Hey Bluesman,

I agree with Zlurgh, chances are the sanding sealer you used is going to be a problem. To make sure, I suggest you apply a couple of coats of dewaxed schellac (I use Zinsser seal coat). Schellac is one of the rare thing polyurethane sticks to.
