Curious if anyone has constructed an SG.
I di not find any build threads.
I have a real one, but it may be fun to make a custom knock-off.
Thanks,
Dan

I wonder if Gibson named it the "Solid Guitar" to spite Les Paul, or perhaps the marketing team was high?
Mine's American made, thank you very much.
It looks like an easy intro to a "carved-top" build. I'm getting bored with flat tops but my carving skills are novice.

SG's are flat top. If you're talking about that ridge around the body, that's easily done with a router.

If you want to get into carved tops just do a real carved top, it's not that hard. Drill press with a safety planer and a random orbital sander, that's all you really need. No carving skills necessary.

No, there are few theories as to why Les Paul pulled his Gibson endorsement in 63 (or was it 64... I don't remember). The two most prominent are that 1- he didn't like the new shape, and 2- he was getting divorced from Mary and wanted to reduce his assets.

From very late 1960 to 1963, the SG was the les paul model and SG, or solid guitar, referred to the special model from; both the les paul and sg shapes.

Thanks Mark, you make it sound so easy! I reckon I should start with Mahogany rather than Mesquite.

I did about ten years ago. I have also modified a few. I'm a big SG fan. Check out the SG Guitar forum. They have a luthiers corner and there has been some great SG project build post on there.

I'm considering building one from a Pecan tree stump that has been dried and rough cut.
The body may be small enough to not weigh a ton if I use the Pecan.
