Was just looking at maple 1x4 neck stock for a Fender style neck and was curious as to what people use......... I noticed that the flat stock cost about 40% more then qtr sawn which seems strange as usually qtr sawn is more. Can someone please enlighten me? I'll be installing a 2 way truss rod along with a skunk stripe. |

If I may skew this slightly, I am going to select some Khaya or Sapele for some solid body necks and bodies from my local reseller. They do not stock American Mahogany. I have never used these woods for guitar building. If I cannot find quarter-sawn, would it be best to select flat-sawn and laminate several pieces for a neck? Or, would flat-sawn or rift-sawn be stable and stiff enough as-is? I want to avoid buying something I cannot use. Thanks, Dan |

I'd laminate because it should make it more stable overall (at least that's what I've always read) and the resulting vertical grain should make it more stable across the width too. Keep in mind that most Sapele is noticeably more dense than Honduran Mahogany or Kaya. It's also harder and more challenging to carve. Kevin Looker |

Thanks Kevin, I'm going to take a look at the Khaya they have. How's the "V" project going? Dan |
