Generally I think my previous necks have been a little too thick, except for the one where I went too far and the carbon fiber is actually visible on the bottom. This time I drilled a series of holes on the back of the neck. My theory is that this will tell me to slow down when the hole disappears as I plane or rasp it. So I can take it down it bit farther and still have 1/8 inch of bamboo left before I hit the carbon fiber. FWIW, this is my first fretboard with binding, and when I glued the fretboard to the neck, to my horror, glue started rising up from the bottom of the fret slots next to the binding in a few places. I think I got them cleaned out ok with some index cards, but next time I will look more closely and fill any gaps with dust and CA before glueing to the neck. |

This stewmac Japanese Fret Slot Cleaning Saw saved me when I accidentally partially filled up a slot with ebony dust and CA on a bound fret board. http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Fretting_su ... g_Saw.html |

What species is that neck wood? It's attractive. |

Quote: This stewmac Japanese Fret Slot Cleaning Saw Thanks, that looks handy. Something tells me I might be ordering one of those before it is over. Quote: What species is that neck wood? That is bamboo plywood board. It is very stiff. Works pretty much like regular wood with the plane rasp and scraper, maybe a little harder on the blades. I tend to run my finger down the neck to look for lumps, with bamboo I have become an expert at removing splinters. It seems like an eco-friendly wood (actually a grass). I occasionally contemplate building an acoustic out of it, except for the soundboard. It seems like someone would have thought of that by now (Yamaha's had a bamboo soundboard and was not well liked). This pic is rough, I'm not through shaping, but you can see the weird asymmetry. |
