Post subject:  Replacing these Strat tuners

My knowledge of repairing & upgrading Fenders is null.

My good friend is sick of these tuners & wants a locking tuner.

Is there a drop in replacement or will we need to drill? I'm ok with drilling but would prefer not to.

Thanks.

Thanks Brian.

After searching I came upon these, which look like the only option of we don't drill ?

Gotoh makes them in the regular SD91 series as well as the more expensive SD510 series. I usually find both on eBay. Stewmac carries the SD91 in normal and locking. The literature at Stewmac says the SD91 are drop in replacements. I believe minor drilling is required for the SD510 for a collar that doesn't go all the way through the tuner hole. The magnum locks on the vintage style Gotoh tuners aren't my favorite, but I don't like most locking tuners. I hope you can find something he likes. Good luck.

I bought Hipshot locking staggered tuners for a recent tele build, and they came with something called a UMP plate. I didn't use it, but I think it's made to retrofit these tuners to existing headstocks without having to drill new holes - the plate itself holds the tuners on in the back. Might be worth checking out - http://www.hipshotproducts.com/content/view/ump.html Good luck!
