I want to ask how long will a file last and how do I extend their lifespan? And how do I keep them sharp? Specifically nut/saddle and fret files. The ones I've always been using get dull really quick. Especially my nut slotting files which are stainless steel Uo-Chikyu Files. These are made in Japan and are really good quality. They cut easily, clean, and straight. I only use a 3 corner file to shape bone and I also notice that it gets clogged after 3-5 minutes of use. |

Many of the files I have are at least 40 years old, still in good shape, and provide good service. I clean them often, and store them well to prevent damage. Your nut files are NOT stainless - they are case hardened steel. Apparently, you are not cleaning your files as you work. Do you have a file card to clean them? Or a brass bristled brush? Even wiping the file on a cloth while you work will clear the gullets of chips and pins. |

Thanks for the reply Chris. Yeah I have a brass one and I brush them when I see that the file's surface is clogged with the material. Should I put something like wax or oil while I use them? I'm afraid putting wax/oil would affect the bone I'm working on. Not sure about the files not being stainless because the guy I ordered it from told me that they were transitioning from the old material to stainless when I bought them. I should buy the stewmac ones. |

I've never treated my files, but Dan Erlewine used to put some kind of wax on his. |
