Hey Folks, A good friend of mine has a 1920s Vega "Tubaphone" Banjolin, that has a neck which is splitting down the center seam. I told him I would do a little repair research for him. We're wondering if it is possible to fix this, or is he better off just hunting for a replacement neck. Or having a new neck built. He's not really concerned with the vintage aspect of the instrument as much as he is getting it back to playable condition. Would love some input from you guys. I would be tempted to try and fix it . Can it be " seperated " at the seam cleaned and reglued ? |

That's what I was thinking Jim. I "believe" It could be done. Thanks for the input. I'm seeing him this weekend at a Fiddlers Festival in Winthrop, WA - hoping to offer him some options then. Thanks! -Mark |

But maybe someone here could speak up and suggest a better Glue for that application . I have 0 experience with hot hide glue and not sure how it would work , but I cant help but wonder if thats what it would have been made with orig. If so I would try to use same glue as orig. |

Yep - If I wind up doing it for him, I'll use HHG, since that's all I pretty much use anyway. Probably use the Old Brown Glue version to get a little extra working time. Thanks guys! -Mark |

Yup... take that neck off and clamp it closed once to make sure it will mesh back up nicely... it should. Then, un-clamp, inject hot hide glue, re-clamp and let 'er set for a day. Reassemble. Mando pluckin' fun! |

Hello I did a similar repair and just used titebond since I don't have much experience with hide glue and it worked out fine. I would recommend removing that strap button since it is most likely what caused this in the first place. I just attach my straps to the bracket hooks with some rope. Actually balances out the instrument a little better then a button....Mike |

Thanks for the input guys! He's still deciding, but sent his Gibson geetar home with me for a new bone nut and saddle + new bridge pins, and a setup tweak... -Mark |
