Post subject: | First project from scratch |
Hi, I'm starting my first project from scratch in a few weeks. I was thinking about a guitar but after researching it I found that I don't have the experience or tools to make one. Since I have some experience in making some smaller instruments I decide to make a box ukulele (since I have no way of bending sides). The body will consist of East Indian rosewood back and sides and a grade A western red cedar top. I will be posting my progress and will take any advice or tips on how to improve. |

Hope it goes well for you. I wouldn't be afraid of building a guitar or bending sides. Its really not as scary as it seems. If you have the tools to cut and carve a neck and thin the plates for the box.....you're pretty much there. Just add a pipe with a heat source and you can bend |

Have decided on a scale for your instrument? One of the really great things about building from scratch is that you can build to pretty much any scale you want. For example, the last instrument I made before taking a four-year hiatus was a 15¾ scale banjo uke. I'll be following your project with interest. |

Cigar box ukes are pretty cool. You can use one of those as your box. Maybe that's your idea?...mike |

I would agree with Quine, I have been bending sides using two 150 watt light bulbs for several years. I would recommend the Hana Lima book. I still use mine on every build for the details. Good luck Bob |
