I am trying to get all the dimensions figured out for my next build. I would really like to build an electric octave mandolin. it will have a 26" scale and Im trying to figure out the fret positions . on stew mac they have a calculator for this which you pick the instrument and put in the scale length and number of frets hit enter and it does the rest. The question I have is on the stew mac calculator they dont have an octave mandolin as one of the instrument options. if I selected the electric guitar would it give me the proper placement of the fret positions? |

I just completed a Irish Bouzouki with a 24.9" scale and cut the fret slots with my normal fret template for that scale length. Use either guitar calculator and figure out the compensation for the string sizes you will be using. Fred |

mandolin, guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar all the same thing just plug in your 26 inch length and how many frets you want. |

Hello, (my very first post on this forum !) You can have a look at the Graham McDonald's string calculator. It's very reach in features, and has some presets, especially for mandolin family, and it does has a 5 string eMando http://www.mcdonaldstrings.com/stringxxiii.html (but as said already, the fact it is a mando or 5 or 8 strings doesn't matter for fret spacing). the interesting thing here is that you can get recommended tensions and gauges. Christophe Edit : by the way, I forgot to say, you can check my last build, which is an "octave baritone" e mando here : http://www.labellenote.fr/articles.php?lng=en&pg=265 |
