First time I've worked with Satin Box, and was pleasantly surprised on how it works. Even with this amount of curly figure I managed to bend the sides without any trouble.....though my bum was puckered up to start with. The bindings are curly Blackwood and Ringed Gidgee for fret boards and head plates. Saverex and Thomastilk-Infeld flat wound stings.. MISI Air pickup system and finished in high gloss polyurehtane. Nice! Those are some beautiful woods! I bet doing the binding on the oval soundport was a challenge; How do you do it? |

I don't think I've seen anyone do soundports like I do, but they are pretty easy. You have to install them before the back and soundboard are on so you have acess for clamps from each edge. I have a Epilog laser that I cut the binding in the donut shape. 1.8mm thick in this case as that is what my sides are. I then glue the purfling to it. From there it's taken to the hot pipe and shape it to fit the upper bout. Then trace around the piece with sharp pencil and remove material. I use a dremel with sanding drum to sneak up on the fit. Then glue in place. CA is the best for this. After dry make sure that the inside is flushed with the sides. Now another donut is cut on the laser. Same material as you'll see it and same inner size hole but the outer is larger so it will be backing up the binding and reinforcing the side. It can be much thinner. I usually make it 1.0mm thick. Bend it to match the shape and then glue in place. If you don't have a laser then its possible to do this with jewelers saw. Just more work. |

Even though the AGF modern style is not my cup of tea, this is a lovely instrument. The rosette parts even, to me, are very well thought out and proportioned. The binding is not outsized, and the peg head style is VG indeed. Is that a little chamfer on the heel at the joint? Nice touch! |
