John, you don't have to resort to name calling. What makes you think I am a 'craftsman'? When I was younger I made a macaroni necklace for my mon but that was the end of my days dabbling in 'arts and crafts'! Ha ha
Wud, ya think? I dunno. I could lay the black in there and if it looks crappy I still can remove it I suppose.
Most of this will be hidden by the fret board anyway so I only need to worry about the exposed areas.
Maybe I need to post a pic of this with the fb on.

Just an idea that I had - something around some curves that separate the repair area from the rest of the top. Curves could blend in to the fretboard. Could put a piece of top material and put it in there to replace the old part. Structure under that are could be strengthened without compromising the top since it's above the soundhole.

Excellent idea! I could also reverse them to be like a faux cutaway. Or not. Your idea is good.

Well this certainly changes things:


The neck is not fully in place. The fret board end matches up to the sound hole pretty well when it is bolted on. Anyway, it gives you an idea of how little of the screw up will show.

No worries Wud! We had the same idea. Turns out it wasn't great. I'm going to try the black. If that fails, I feel some creative inlay will be in order.

if you try the black and that doesnt work as well as you'd like, you could always just do a burst to hide the edge.

All good suggestions. I am liking the burst idea quite bit. I have always wanted to do a slight burst with dark edges but not much else getting color. Thats not even BS I am making up to cover up this goof despite how much it seems like it might be!

I was just about to suggest something like Steve's curves. You could rout out some curves from the edge of the mistake to the underside of the fretboard to make a cat ear shape. Then fill it all in with black.

A burst is also a good idea.

How much time is there in a uke top? 3 hours? Maybe 4? Quit jerkin around and rip that top off and make a new one!

Though I wouldn't want you to think that I think that you're "jerkin around" I am with Steven, Tony.....I would make a new top. You could even rout around the existing rosette, which looks very nice, and inlay the whole thing in the new top so you don't have to re-do or scrap the nice abalone you've got in there. Maybe it wouldn't be thick enough to do that, but it's a thought to save some time if you re-do the top.

Kinda liking that idea as well . You could do that and if it doesnt turn out you still have time to make a new top . what ya got to lose ?

The main reason I have not retopped it yet is that I don't have more Koa and there is a price cap on this hunk of wood. Thus my need to fix or hide it. If this was a commission for a paying customer there is no decision to be made. I would have retopped it already.

Sorry to hear about the mishap, tony. Have you thought about retopping with spruce? I know you have a little bit of spruce

I have a few pieces of spruce. Thanks Brian and Bryan.
I am testing a few theories and hypothesizing about what to do. Which means I fell asleep very early last night and didn't get a chance to work on the uke.
I'm going to see if I can do a decent burst. If not, I'm going to retop it with spruce or cedar.
