Hello everyone - this is my first post and I hope I posted the photos properly. I'm definitely not a luthier, but I've been a woodworker for 30 years and have been asked by members of a local orchestra to help out with minor instrument repairs. I have checked the guitar yet to see if I can open the crack slightly to allow me to apply thin hide glue. If I can, I think this should be a fairly easy repair. If not, I have thought about sawing down the length of the crack and inserting a thin spline and gluing it in. Any thoughts on this procedure? Thanks in advance, Kim |

Getting the glue in there is the trick. Thin cyanoacrylate may run in there and serve well enough to hold, but other glues might be problematic. For an inexpensive instrument like this one, I often drill a 3/16" hole through the heel, or through the fingerboard a little past the crack, pour in the glue and follow it by jamming a 3/16" diameter screwdriver as a plunger to force the glue into and out of the crack. I can generate quite a lot of hydraulic pressure that way, and the glue floods out nicely. Then clamping up, cleaning up, and filling the hole with a nice little plug takes care of the job. My little plug would be a piece of ordinary dowel, sliced off and stained with a marking pen, or whatever. |

Thanks, John and Frank. I now have the guitar and see that it is fairly easy to open the crack. I think I'll try CA glue. Should I use a syringe? Should I have nail polish remover handy to remove glue that seeps over the edge? |

Is this a Bolt on by any chance? I would assume not since it is an orchestra but if it is be careful that you do not seize the bolt. Is there a bulge by the heel on the sides? Think i am seeing things not really there. |

I think the operation was successful. I applied CA glue with a sewing needle clipped off to form a tiny fork and also got plenty of glue in directly from my Hot Stuff bottle. Time will tell. |
