Post subject:  Seeking pigment suggestions for an old De Durro violin?

Good afternoon,

I am trying to match pigment for a light touch up on an old Salvadore De Durro violin. I believe this is french made. It is circa 1900 and imported by B&J importers in New York. Can anyone suggest pigments to produce the color we see in the pics below?

Can't really help, Sal, but if you are desperate enough, you can use the method from the movie "The Red Violin", but I hope it doesn't come to that! :D

Hello, Sal. I'm afraid I'm no help, either. I'm not knowledgable about violins in general and I don't know much about their finishes, either. I will be real interested in how you proceed. Having said all that, I must also say that, from what I can see of her, I like her just the way she is. I think she looks quite pretty with that good, honest wear. You might also check at mimf.com and navigate through to their bowed instruments channel. Someone there might be able to provide useful advice that wouldn't alter your instrument in an irreversible way.

Hi Sal,

Not sure what part of the world you're in but you might try George Heinl Violins in Toronto, Canada http://www.georgeheinl.com/products/shop/category:411
They carry a good selection of the varnish, etc. You could probably contact them for suggestions.

I use Behlins solar-lux for my touch ups and restoration work. It can be used as a stain or blended with finish materials of all types for various types of work. Looks like a blend of med red mahogany and hickory would be close to what I see on my screen.

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, the luthier shop in canada does not ship to US. I found a vendor on ebay that might work without "brewing my own". I will let folks know how it goes.

Has similarities in colour to my violin.
Which was made in Paris in 1924.
I personally like the battle scars.
