I have a LMI stock neck that I’d like to reshape into more of a “V” neck profile. Does anyone know offhand or have a Martin OM with a V neck handy that they could measure the following:

- width and overall depth at the first fret
- width and overall depth at the twelfth fret

thanks

so the neck is already shaped, kinda like a C ??? what is the current depth at the nut ???

Anyway - you can do a lot of different sizes - a friend had a 1929 0-18, nice V on it, it was 1 7/8 at the nut, depth was about .860 - up at the tenth (12 fretter) is was about .960. I find that when doing a V shape, I like the upper end of the neck to be about 80 to 100 thou thicker than the nut end, whatever you make it.

I made a replacement ncek for a Washburn electric, and it had a sweet feeling V neck on it - 1 11/16 nut, but it was still about .840 deep, and up at the 15th about .920.

Basically all you need to do is flatten off the shoulders of the neck once you get the depths you want at each end - at least thats how I do them.

I have seen neck profiles on the Martin site. I think they are actual size.

Tony / Alan,

Thanks for the info. Yes, I had found Martin’s neck section reference page -

Martin neck sections

so I could see the “V” profile but didn’t have a scale reference. The neck shoulders near the nut appear slightly full and rounded becoming much more flat higher up the fretboard. I’d like to scale them up on the photocopy machine and use them to construct some simple neck shaping guides.
