Osage may very well be the wood of choice in years to come when the current supplies of BRW are gone. Which means that Bob will have the market cornered on the best tonewood available, or at least the tonewood closest to sounding like BRW.

I hear Bob's going to start dying it brick red and chocolate brown....maybe add some black streaks in it too.

Bob, I just checked out the stores and you seem to have a problem. There isn't any Osage left. Tell me this is only because you haven't updated your website and there is bunches of it in the shed just waiting to make a trip out to the Wet West Coast, actually frozen at the moment.

I'm going to try this stuff, too. In the book "Luthier Woods" from GAL orthe book "Understanding Wood", can't remember which; they say that osage orange has almost zero effect from humidity change.

BTW, they also say that "dogwood" makes an excellent FB and will dye jet black and is harder than ebony. Just something I read, no personal knowledge.

Ron, I want to try osage orange also. But around here it's called hedge. About 9 months ago a few large hedge trees were taken out across the road. I was laid up at the time and they were gone before I could see about getting them. They wen't for fire wood.

Would you also be kind enough to report on the 'workability' of osage orange. It is a favorite of bowyers building traditional long bows and recurves.

I'm confused about this particular wood. Lots of mention of Osage Orange for bows and "hedge" local names, but I don't think this "Osage Orange" is from North America and is not the Osage Orange we are familiar with that grows in the USA, but an abundant and large tree species from South America? No shorage of it there. Bob, can you clarify this for us?

Larry my website page on Osage Orange explains this wood and origin. I've been told by more than one luthier that it is every bit as good as Osage from the US. Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks Bob.....the species name helps. I used to sell this wood in lumber form in the store and it tapped similar to Padauk if I recall. Here's some links to it's identity and common names, but do you have any data regarding it's physical and mechanical properties?

Larry to me it taps much more like Honduran RW or one of the other hard dense rosewoods. In fact in a blindfold test I hard a hard time telling the difference between the 2 Data is out there somewhere but I haven't researched it yet.
