Wondering if you folks have a favorite concert you have seen that stands out over the years..In 1982 I went to see " The Grand daddy of us all" according to George( won't mention Segovia's comment)

Wow he was 87....I remember his guitar was frequently going out of tune and he was becoming frustrated and commented "she was just like a woman" I kept the program and here's what he played..

I have seen most of the great classical players and another highlight was seeing Julian Bream in Toronto and actually going back stage and getting him to sign my program...I have that somewhere too but I can't find it right now..If I'd only got a picture with him!!.oh well ...for I feel he is the greatest guitarist ever to play.

Madonna "Girly Show" Tour.
I have seen just about everybody that I have ever wanted to see, including KISS five times. Almost every big band of the 80's and 90's and I have to say the Madonna show was above them all. She was phenomenal.
I know I know, but I speak the truth.

Madonna is a great performer, no doubt. She has years of experience.


I have been to massive gigs, and being in a HUGE crowd is a pretty awesome experience.

But, I much prefer the smaller gig. You actually get the chance to speak to the performer.

There was a gig at Wembly Stadium I went to called "Champion of the World", where there were just a whole welter of Christian artists playing their stuff, and I saw Delirious live (seen 'em four times now). Really excellent. Massive worship session. Pretty mind blowing singing with 70,000 people.

Another great gig I went to was last year. I saw Phil Beer and Steve Knightely, in a band called "Show Of Hands"...on stage before the show was at least 15 different types of stringed instruments, and they both played them all to a great degree of competency. They were totally and utterly inspiring.

Another fave gig was Martyn Joseph last year too. A more intense, intimate, emotive experience, but his show just made you leave the place in wonder...

I don't know who I'm gonna see this year, I was going to see Ritchie Blackmore for a big gig experience and perhaps visit the local pub where live folk gigs are held on a regular basis, as long as my husband doesn't mind doing a little babysitting....

I've seen David Russell in solo concerts a couple of times. What a superb player! Plus, he's got the best tremolo in the business.

The Red Clay Ramblers, when they were touring with Shawn Colvin as a member of the band. First time I'd heard her, and my jaw, literally, dropped open.

Iris Dement, solo. Transported me to a higher plane!

Rory Block, solo. I expected something special. She exceeded that.

Allison Krause & Union Station, in a great old theatre in Kalamazoo, MI. She was 18 years old, just out of high school, and making a national name for herself. One of the concert promoters told me that she and bandmate Allison Brown (banjo), also 18, were taking photos of each other doing rude things with some of the statues in the theatre. Great musicians, great concert!

Bluesman Albert Collins, who died a couple of years later. A pro at work. High energy, great singing, and guitar playing that was like the Voice of God.

Bluesman Luther Allison, only a couple of months before he was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer. Couldn't tell, though, because he played non-stop for two hours, with the energy of a 20 year old. I got to interview him, too, for a public radio program. A truely nice guy, who'd lived a tough life and come out on top, for a while.

Count Basie and His Orchestra. Guitarist Freddy Green was still in the band. "Philly" Joe Jones playing drums. They were smokin'!!!

Johnny Mathis. Yep! I really went to his show to hear his intermission act, the Craig Hundley (sp?) Trio. Hundley was a young jazz pianist who was more famous for being one of the kids in a Star Trek episode featuring attorney Melvin Belli (sp?) as the villain. The trio was average, but Mathis just blew me away! He brought along a full orchestra, did all of his hits that I'd heard many times before, and it was like I was hearing them for the first time. Another pro at work!

There are others, but I'll stop now.

I'm not sure if I can top that one Hesh!

I saw Carlos Santana in Pullman, Washington in the fall of 1969. The band got on stage fired up and played for 2 1/2 hours without a pause. Whew!!

1987 U2 Joshua Tree tour in Vancouver was just awsome

1998 Celine Dion, she is just amazing in concert, she did it "in the round" I really like that kind of concert. She also had Andre-Philippe Gagnon as the opener, wow, what an amazing musical impressionist.

1990 Janet Jackson rythem nation tour, she also put on a fabulous show.

Went and saw Hi-5 with my 4 year old this past summer (that was the last concert I saw)

It's certainly been awhile for me.

Wow...Irwin, you got to see two of my hero's. Segovia and Bream. Wow.

My best concert was undoubtedly 1980 (I think) at the Strand theater in Ithaca, NY......Phil Keaggy. Good golly! The guy was still doing electric guitar sets back then, and wow....he just blew us away.

True story.... he comes out onto the stage and plays some amazing rifs for like 5 minutes, then stops and say, "I'm a little rusty" or something like that. That got our attention. So he starts to "warm up" by absolutely wailing on the guitar, totally flooring us with speed, complexity, and great melody all rolled into one. Then he stops and makes a statement eluding to the Kenny Rogers tv commercials for the Quick Pickin', Fun Strummin' Home Guitar Course -

"You too can learn to play the guitar."

The place went nuts.... then he immediately dove into a real kickin' rock number for song number 1 of the night while everyone was on their feet from his warmup. Literally - the best concert I've ever been to, past or future. I doesn't get better than that night.

Saw The Who a couple years ago at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, or at least the surviving members, Ringo's kid was on drums. That gig blew me away. I was in the second row, right in front of Pete Townsend. Awesome.

Saw Springsteen at the Sydney Cricket Ground a few years back. That was the most disapointing gig I've ever been to, still want my money back. He was great, but my $150 seat was awful, and the sound kept cutting out every 30 seconds. The promoter went bankrupt, I'm happy about that part.

My father took me to see Buddy Rich when I was about 15 or 16.What an amazing drummer with an amazing orchestra. I went to many concerts since that first one but no one compares to Buddy on the drums IMHO

Calton...Haven't seen Russell ( I live on the east cost in a relatively small city and we don't get the big classical names coming here) have a few of his CD's and there are a few interesting clips on u tube of him...fantastic

Wow Hesh..when was that concert..Neil(acoustic) is probably my favorite stuff to listen to...what a songwriter!!..Brittany..I have a few buddies that were "dragged" to Brit concerts by their Daughters...of course they told me in confidence, that the shows were awesome

Rod ..WOW U2 Joshua tour...I still think that is one of the best albums ever made..still have the vinyl!!

Paul...I saw The Boss in Buffalo touring for Born in the USA...same as you terrible seats..last row floors..had to spend the concert with my date on my shoulders..not complaining..but the show was great and it being in Buffalo, made Bruce's music all the more meaningful!

I think it's great to get out and see a person in live performance if we can...nothing like it...life's too short...and live music is where it's at..Cheers

 

 

My most recent favorite was Norman Blake. It was in an old theater and there probably weren't over 100 pepole there. I was sitting about 25 feet from Norman and was totally amaze for 2 hours watching him play.

Older stuff includes Clapton, The Who, Eagles, etc,etc,etc.

Clapton, Jeff Beck and Stevie Ray Vaughn the Saturday before Stevie Ray died.  One hell of a show, all three jamming for almost an hour as an encore.

Haven't seen many, and none in the past 20 years or so. There are two that I really liked, though: Elton John in '72 in Memphis and Bette Midler (when Barry Manilow was her piano player).

Well, let me think...

Last September Don Ross came to play a small venue here in Ottawa. We were only about 250 in attendance... I came away from that show with a new appreciation and perspective about the acoustic guitar.

As for good 'ol rock... I'd have to say it was a toss-up between David Wilcox and Kim Mitchell, both in front of the Corel Centre (though not at the same time)... Smalish gigs with huge sound systems... Rock'n Roll, beer, loud volume and the great outdoors!!! Oh yeah!

- Rush - 1975?

Tommy Emmanuel. Both times.

And Jason Mraz, live, is a whole different ballgame to the overproduced, polished stuff you hear on the radio. The Ben Folds gig I went to two weeks back was also pretty amazing.
