Can I get some opinions on the sound characteristics of Yellow Siris from anyone out there that has built with it or played a acoustic guitar made from It? I'm about to start building a Weissenborn, and I'm interested in using this particular wood because of the way It looks and the price, but I am more concerned with the sound that it will produce above all else. I'm particulary concerned with the wood being descrided as light and soft, can this possibly effect the sustain? Thanks in advance for your opinions.

I built a Weissenborne type guitar with sirus last year & the owner is very happy with it.
The sound is quite mellow & very even across the strings. I found that the bass needed a bit of punch, so went one guage heavier on the bass string. The owner plays it in open "C" now & uses medium strings with good results. The highs are very clear & smooth, right up to the top of the fretboard.
I did change the bracing patten from the original plans, using a more standard X pattern. The low profile, fat braces on the plans just didn't look right to me.
Siris is super easy to bend (not that that's an issue with a Weissenborne) but it is softer than most hardwoods & will dent quite easily.
I am just finishing a siris OM Venecian cutaway. It's not strung up yet the the box taps with a nice bassy ring.
The figured siris is very pretty under finish. It glues well & is very stable. No cupping in the sides & very little springback.
If you are buying siris for a Weiss, see if they can send you a chunk to make the peghead & blocks. You'll get a much better colour match that with mahogany.
Oh yeah... The dust makes me sneeze!

Thanks for your sharing your experience with Yellow Siris Daniel, It sounds like a very promising wood. I would like to get a chunk for the peghead as well If I decide to try it. When you say "blocks" are you suggesting that It be used for the tailblock?

The head block will be exposed on the back side where the block tapers into the peghead. I used sirus for this piece. (I think I used H. mahogany for the tail block.)
This is another place & didn't follow the plans. I made the head block & peghead in one piece. It is easier & stronger than using a M&T joint.
After the summer is past, I'll be building two more Weiss type guits. I'm trying to find some ribbon grain Sapele sets for them. It'll be interesting to compare the finished instruments.

Yeah, one of those guits is mine.
Robin & Marshal of Cloud Forest Products are neighbours of mine. I resawed a small batch of siris for them & they gave me a Weis set & a guitar B&S set in exchange.
