Yeah, we have been thinking about another swap meet.

This time though let's give the sponsors a little time to prepare.

Lance and I will discuss this and maybe we can shoot for early - mid October. That should give everyone at least a couple weeks to prepare.

Mid October would be good for me. I have some items to sell/trade this time and I will make sure everything is ready in time for that. (take pictures, number, etc)

The Luthiers Auctions site is setup and functioning here. Is there any reason why we do not use that site as a place for people to list things they want to sell?

If a section was added for want to buy (WTB) then people could register and pay for a listing for something they are looking to trade or buy.

At the moment even while the listing fee has been one cent, not many people have used the luthiers auctions site or at least not enough to pay for its upkeep. I think that if the listing fee were set at a reasonable price it could help to defray the cost of operating even if it is only a portion of the cost, it will still more than at present. If someone wants to list a want to buy or trade listing, they can pay the same listing fee as a seller, or something similar.

If we could use the Luthiers Auctions site for swap meets and "yard sale" type listings, it would attract more traffic to the luthiers auctions site which would in turn attract more people interested in guitar building to OLF...

Just an idea of how to leverage what is already built but I am open to any type of format for a swap meet that does not interfere with the normal commerce of our sponsors. One option could be to make all listings from OLF sponsors free so that when they list specials or closeouts on their websites the listing on the Luthiers Auctions can link the buyer back to the sponsors website where they may end up buying not only just the special or closeout item they saw on the Luthiers Auctions site but may end up buying more once they are on that sponsors website.

It is also nice to make a trade, occasionally, instead of just buying and selling.  Oh yeah, that's why they call it a "Swap Meet", Stupid!

I'll dust off some of those sets I will probably never use.

How did the shipping from Canada to the US work for people last time?  Any issues (such as duty, taxes, etc)?

That reminds me, how many sets do you keep around for "future builds".  Buy them as needed, or stock up for 10-15 years down the road?

Laurie

I sure like the swap meet idea, it kind of allows you to go berserk for a couple of days a year and get some really good deals and have a lot of fun too.

I think I've visited the LA site under 10 times since it's been up. I certainly tend to head over to a sponsors website if I am in the market for something.

For myself, the LA site is note how I like to shop.

The swap meet is more of a luthier's feeding frenzy and when Zoot pimps like Uncle Bob chum the waters all the sharks come out to play.

Oh and Laure, the shipping to the US is really quite easy, no issues with duty etc..... It is a bit expensive though, just make sure the buyer knows it's more money.

Last swap meet I sent out 4 packages of bindings and each was slightly different in size and the shipping from Canada to the US ranged from $15-$20 IIRC.

Last time I didnt really have anything to trade, so I just ended up buying a *LOT* of stuff. I'm still using some of the materials I bought last time, and it is all high quality woods. I bought some much needed tools too.

This time, I have a few "off the wall" things to trade or sell. No worries about competing with any of our sponsors on most of it as it is stuff none of them carry. I have also managed to purchase several sets of the same kinds of woods (most of them bulk buys) that I would like to trade for something different.

I'll be ready next month!
