Rather than setting a reinforcing strip into a routed channel on the fretboard
how about just gluing on the reinforcement strip without rebating same. You
could have the proturfding strip sitting into the truss rod channel. This
would also serve to stop the fretboard slipping sideways during glue up.

Just an idea.

Hey Bob, I like to use sapwood... everywhere I can put it.

I sometimes reinforce the fingerboards by laminating a strip of mahogany under the board... I always bind them anyway so it doesn't show.

This one even has sapwood in the FB binding.

Bob Long I like that very much. Also by laminating a piece of mahogany to the bottom of the FB sounds like a good solution to me. Sure opens up a new world for fretboards.

I've been providing booked fingerboards for electric bass for a few years..mostly acrylized material as it evens out the sap-heartwood property differences. Less risk of movement on the long, wide ER boards also. Some of the ER (extended range) boards are 7" + wide for 8-13 strings!!! Makes a mighty fine looking bass.

Wow Bob, that fingerboard is stunning. The binding too. I love it.

I like the look of an inlayed fingerboard.

What about the wear of the fretboard? Would the sapwood area wear away under heavy use?

I like this idea a lot. I think a thin strip of sapwood down the center would be very cool!. Also,Great guitar Bob Long!
Good question Philip.I wonder how it would wear over time.
