Finally getting around to building the Williams binding jig.  It calls for 1/4" phenolic.  Anyone know a source for this material, or an alternative?

Check your local industrial supply houses. Places like McMaster Carr,
Grainger, MSC, etc., will usually sell it in rods, bars, and sheets.

Is that stuff the same thing that cutting boards are made from?  You can get those at the grocery store and cut them up.

No Waddy, different animal. This is essentially phenolic kraftpaper sort-of-like stuff in layers with some sort of bonding agent (epoxy?) that creates a hard board. It drills well, routes like wood etc, but is very stable and makes great jig material. Phenolic board is also used for PC boards, and IRRC, Formica. Although I could be wrong about some of that.

There are many grades of phenolic, and the better ones are linen based rather than Kraft paper.   "Garolite" is the stuff I get from McMaster-Carr.   

PC boards are mostly now made with fire retardant epoxy reinforced with fiberglass.   Formica and other brands of HPL (High Pressure Laminate) is a phenolic/kraft paper product; there were a number of years when it seemed that I was using many square miles of the stuff...

Why not aluminum stock??

Aluminum can gall; Lexan or Plexi can melt.   That said, I do use both often, but for the bulk of my working templets for router table or pin router I like phenolic.

I have some lexan, I might try that.  Only critical thing is not blowing out the bolt holes near the edges. Also wished there were a source of aluminum plate close by.  I could get a phenolic board from Highland for $13 and pay 6 for shipping, arrgh.  Shipping is becoming ridiculous.

 Richard, you might try Mapletex in Tacoma WA. for phonolic.I believe the owners name is Steve. I could be wrong, it has been along time since I had any contact.

I see you don't need it but someone else may.

Phenolic is used for router bases I see in their catalog.

    I do use Alum . If you are using a plastic use 1/4 lexan . Phenolic is available at MSC or most industrial supply warehouses.
     You can use any rigid material that wears well. Even wood will work just make the holes clean and wax them well.
