That's strange. Can't imagine what that means.

Well, I'm a happy camper. Thanks, Lance and Brock! The speed (or lack of speed) of the old forum database was a pain in the butt, and I really love the current speed. I love the new post editing console.

As for the problems some are having with search:
Why can't you search for "Koa" or "Oak" or "Bob"? Well, when the search algorithm was written, someone made an arbitrary cutoff point parameter on the minimum number of characters allowed. Someone probably decided that 4 characters would be the default minimum. So, you can search for "Hock" but not "Koa". This is done for speed of searching. It eliminates all the 1 and 2 and 3 letter words from the search. It is controlled by a setting (Min characters indexed by search) in the phpBB software that the forum admins can change. We might ask Lance and Brock real nice if they would run an experiment for a week (or even for a day) and reset the minimum number of characters to 3. If the search speed is still acceptable, then maybe that could be left as the new cutoff. I do suspect that there would be a slight increase in lag time for the search to complete, but (since this forum is now obviously using a much more powerful and faster database), I would bet it would still be plenty fast.

I suggest one minor change: make Hesh "Petrified Wood" rather than Old Growth Brazilian.

Dennis

Waddy, do you mean "Putrefied" rather than "Petrified"? Nah, Hesh is to clean to ever putrefy. How about "Spalted"?

Dennis

As I've said before, I like the new software. One question though… (perhaps this has been discussed already, but I have not seen it).

It’s the picture upload thing; now that we are using links to external picture hosting web sites, will the pictures will be gone from the OLF archives as soon as those servers disappear; users delete their accounts, the links are broken or whatever? I know this is a common way of handling pictures on forums such as this, but for example over on MIMF (where the library maintenance is a much debated subject) they make a big point of this, if the pictures in a thread are not uploaded to the MIMF server, the thread will not be archived. I think it makes sense, since many threads will obviously be worthless without the pictures.

What are your thoughts on this?

Arnt, the new software is the same as the old, you have a choice to either link out or upload images.
Look below your dialog box when you are writing a post, there is a section called Upload Attachments. You can browse and upload from there.

Lance, I noticed a couple of people posted, last night and this morning that they are getting messages that the upload limit for the forum has been reached for posting pictures, and they could not post. I'm testing that now. I did the Browse, got a picture, and I am reading at the top of this thread, a red message that says "Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached.", and it would not post the picture.

Thanks Waddy, well look in to that.
For the record, we have unlimited banwidth and serverspace with our server package. So there may be a check box in the forum software that is limiting this.
So much yet to learn ;)

I figured it had to be something like that. Those of us who post lots of pictures will appreciate that.

This is understandable in as much as my "Week-end At Uncle Bob's" thread showed pics of thousands of beautiful boards......... :D

IIRC that is a "feature" that is used to limit the impact of the porn spammers.

Maybe we can find a work around if you have a post count above X or something.

Lance/Brock

Have a look at the UploadPic mod for PHPBB.

It works much the same as the pic upload on the old forum and no issues
with maximum number of pics uploaded.

Bob

Howdy Gents! Thunderstorms in Houston this morning knocked out our power briefly. When I went to log back in the board would not log me in automatically as it had been doing. Then, when I tried to log in, the software would briefly log me in and then kick me off before I could get to the index page. So, I went into internet options, cleared cookies, temp files and history and, then I logged back in and checked the box to automatically login. Voila! I am back in.

I also really like the new forum. It is fast and easy to use. Great work Lance and Brock! Thanks!

John, I don't think there is an option for "who started" a thread type search. Also, if you want multiple forums, you can just hold the control key down and select the forums you want to search under. I tried a search for Alan Carruth under all forums and got 996 matches. I tried searching with the "first post of topic" selected but it didn't matter, I got all of Alan's posts.

Thanks, Rod (and others)
I should have thought of the Ctrl-click for multiple forum selects- ..
I guess I was befuddled by the fact that the Search First Post of Topic didn't do what it says- it seems to return the first post in every topic that Al has contributed to....very strange sort of thing but I guess lots of folks want that choice...

Cheers

John

I think the ones posted, recently, are links to pictures on another website, like photobucket, picasa, or any other website with a picture. The only bad thing about those posts, is that if the link is broken, they are gone. It makes for a pretty bad set of archives, if those links are not kept up to date.
