I remember when there were reefs in the backyards of restaurants in the Florida keys. Not reef track, but actual just small pockets of backyard where there was corals, parrotfishes, etc..
It's all just algae now.

I thought for sure some of you would get the jist of this.
I know it's odd, crabs and what not, but it's what the core idea of the bay is about. That and old bay, beer, and actually trying to get enough meat out of these things to have a meal, instead of just making hot dogs on the side and acting like you love to eat crabs!

I spend a good amount of time in Maryland as my wife is from there. We did the crab thing last visit.. The hot dogs tasted great! Better to just buy it picked and canned instead of faking you can get food out of them.... :mrgreen:

There are five more inlays coming for the series.

Todd, what ever happened to the little Phillip's Take out place that used to be down by Crystal City? Long time ago they had good steamed crabs. Now probably far from the best, Phillips I mean, not the take out. I assume it has been closed for a while.. I went to the one in Baltimore several years ago, and was sorely disappointed. The best I ever remember, though, was sitting on the dock in West River pulling crabs up in the traps, and steaming them along with corn on the cob, then sitting on the dock, eating crabs, corn on the cob and fresh sliced tomatoes. When finished, wash the shells off the dock, and toss the cobs. All clean, and stuffed full.

Nice work Craig - very nicely composed an executed.

Are the blue crabs related to Velvet Swimming crabs? They look pretty similar to the Velvet Swimmers I've seen when diving in the UK, very cool looking crabs.

The velvet crab is genus Necora (Necora Puber)
The blue crab is Callinectes sapidus
So they are related by being crustaceans and decopods, but other than that are more like far off cousins.

Thanks, Todd. My wife and I were both disillusioned on that last visit to Phillips. When they told us they didn't have any local crabs, we just looked at each other. Ordered, ate, and left, very disappointed. We had driven over 4 hours out of our way to get there, because of our memories from the late '60's and early '70's. Everything changes. One of my other memories was the Inn at Knapps Narrows. We used to dock at the marina and walk up to the Inn for lunch. In those days it was quaint. Probably a tourist haven now. Other than that, regatta's on the bay were the fun things. My father in law was master sailer and racer. Danish.
