That really sucks Shane, sorry. I'm really glad though that it wasn't any worse.

It's amazing that one can be as experienced and have the years of working with power tools under their belt as you without having an accident and one split second can change that forever.

Heal quick my friend.

i hope your finger stays ...

Bummer man, I knew when I saw your thread title, this was not going to be pretty. I did a similar thing right after I got my band saw but that blade your using could eat hands. I hope your guitar pickin parts are still working. Get well soon!!

Dang, that totally sucks. I sure hope you heal up well my friend, and that that little finger stays put.
I also was worried about your son having experienced that...I hope he doesn't have any residual emotional trauma from it, other than a real good healthy fear of power tools.

Shane, that's not the sort of news we like to hear, hope it heals up quickly and well.

This is the first thread I've know on the forum where no-one's asked for photos!

Wow, what terrible news. I guess on the bright side, if you have to lose a finger that would be the best one. I sure hope you get to keep them all though.

Good luck with your recovery

Shane, my heart also sunk when I saw the title! I hope you keep your positive attitude about what happened, and use it as a learning experience for you and your son. He, and all of us need to learn respect for everything in life that has that kind of danger... cars, motorcycles, guns, wild animals, deep water... just to name a few. The key is to respect these things! Not fear them. We wouldn't accomplish much in life if we are afraid of things that can hurt us.

Take care, Buddy

Shane,
So sorry to hear this. Hope you have a speedy recovery and you are back at it in no time! I thought I had a close call this weekend when some scissors slipped and sliced the end of my finger. Almost to the bone; but that is nothing compared to what you went through. My thoughts are with you!

Man....I hate stories like this. PLEASE tell me it wasn't your fretting hand!

Here's hoping you heal up well and quickly. Your attitude about the whole thing sounds as positive as can be expected.

[xx(] errrgggghhhh!!!!!

i am forever grateful that my only traumatic encounter with a power saw blade, of the genus tablensis, was very mild, leaving only a small telltale scar on my left thumb. would that you too had been so fortunate.

best wishes for a speedy and after effect free recovery!!!

Shane, I hope all works out well for you, and thanks for posting, as we all need reminders to be careful. I've seen a lot of "stuff" related to trauma on my real job, but even though I don't know you, you are part of this forum which in my mind makes you family, and none of us crewmembers at work ever want to have to fly a family member....it's too close to home. I'm glad it wasn't any worse than it is, and I hope you have a good recovery.

Brad

Shane,

I am new to guitar building and relativiely new and inexperianced with the tools we use to build them. Knowing this, I have been extremely careful and take the time to go slowly each time I use them. I can see down the road, the more comfortorable you get with them, the more likely that you could become inattentive.

I can tell you that now, however long it may be, I will always think about your thread here on the OLF, and how I was wincing as I read down the page hoping it would just turn out to be a close call. I will think of this every time I go to turn on my table saw, or band saw, or drill press for that matter. Thank you for this.

Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery, 10 out of 10!

Kurt

Shane-
Best wishes for a speedy and successful recovery.
Also, thanks for taking the time to post the news of your accident- it may have prevented mishaps in our own shops. I know I will be thinking about you before I flip the power on for my saw.

Regards
John

Thanks a lot all for the kind warm wishes! When I got home last night the babysitter had already had my son, Malcolm, asleep. So this morning when he got up he and I talked a bit and I thanked him for being there to help me. I was able to turn off the re-saw after this happened but I couldn't reach the switch for the dust collector and hold my hand at the same time so he did that for me before we went out and got a friend to drive us to the hospital. I asked Malcolm how he was doing. He replied "Fine, now!". I asked how he was before and he said "I almost had a heart attack when it happened!!" He stayed quite calm though through the whole thing so I think he will be doing well. We had cut up a piece of very dry maple that we are going use for his new violin so he was happy about that. He was also at the bench numbering sets so he didn't actually see it happen and I covered my hand right away so he didn't see what it looked like until we were at the hospital where he did keep some distance.

Anyway, I have included the x-rays of my hand with captions. A copy of these are going on the re-saw as a reminder. Please feel free to use these as you please.

Thanks again, especially for your concern for Malcolm!

Shane
