In the past I've seen posts detailing how to make rope binding for Weissenborns. I've been searching to try and find these again, but have had no luck. Can anyone point me in the right direction for a detailed description outlining 'how-to make' rope binding.

Thanks, Kim

There is a thread on how to make It in the MIMF forum archives. I don't recall seeing It here. Just type in "rope binding" in the search engine. I just saw It.

Thanks for your response Shane, but residing in Australia, the freight costs are too high. I just checked MIMF and a search for 'rope binding' dosen't find anything

Showtell, the reason you didn't get any results from the search engine is because you put apostrophes on both sides of rope binding. You will get search results for rope binding If you use quotation marks, or just the words rope binding. I would place a link for you but I'm not sure If thats allowed since It's a instrument making forum also. It is there.

Ron,

You can post the link here. We are all about sharing info and Deb's forum is the still a fantastic resource!

Showtell, that was Todd that posted that I have these in stock and indeed I do! If Tim at Australian Tonewoods has them you should get them from him. He is great guy and worthy of your patronage! Inless of course you just wnat to make them!

Shane

Kim,

If you want to make your own there is a tutorial here and here - you need to scroll down the page a lot.

Shane's/Tim's stuff would save you the bother.

Yeah Tim should have plenty in stock.

One thing though is they're 2.5mm square (0.1") which is reduced to a bit less vertically when you scrape the white fibre edge off to expose the top face, so if your top/back are any more than the original 2.5mm then it'll require some different thinking to make it work effectively as a binding.

That you are correct. Nonetheless if you are using this 0.1" rope as binding, you'll need to come up with a stopgap to effectively seal the end grain such as binding first with a contrasting binding, then routing the rope channel and putting it into place over the first binding.

Thanks everyone for their input on rope binding, it's much appreciated. I will post pics of the Weissenborn when it gets closer to completion.

Regards, Kim
