I am using the vintage Schaller tuners and am preparing to drill the holes. I have read every scrap of info in the archives and it looks like 10mm or 25/64" is the best bet for drilling the holes. My question though (and I'm having trouble interpreting in the archives) is can you use this bit all the way through? Or do you absolutely need to drill 1/4" first and then ream for the bushing. I am hoping to hear I can use the one-size bit straight through. This would leave the hole from the back side bigger than necessary - but with the tension on the bushing it seems like it wouldn't really matter. Correct me if I am wrong - my wife always does.

Christian, I haven't used the vintage Schallers yet (I'd like to though) but I did find this review on the 13th fret about them.

Sounds like you drill the hole clear through (I use 25/64" drill for my Schaller tuners).

10mm all the way through !
Protect the wood the bit will come through with a wood caul clamped tight to it!
So you do not tearout that wood.
Al will be fine!
I've done hundreds of these!
After finishing the hole will have to be cleaned of finish -the hole will be smaller because of the finish build-up!

To clean the hole out of finish, just put the 10 mm bit in your drill chuck, and turn the chuck by hand.
