Stew mac is now carrying Lawrence-McFadden Grain Filler. Anyone tried this stuff? The directions make it look easy to use... I will spray Nitro under and overtop. Rosewood guitar with maple bindings.
I used the colortone grain filler on my 1st guitar and much like most everyone here that has tried it didn't like it. I found it difficult to remove the excess and sand was the main reason - it is tough stuff when it dries. I didnt use it on the sides - just the back, just built up coats of laquer on the sides. They didnt fill quite as well as the colorton on the back though.

Im exploring alternatives to an epoxy, though zpoxy is at the top of that list from what ive researched here.

It's a good oil-based filler, but so are many other brands. Don't expect magic.

sounds like it is worth at least a can to try it out...

I've used it a couple times under a nitro.

Doesn't hurt to do a couple sessions with it, especially in deep pores.
Make sure you seal before applying unless you want the darker stain to tint your wood.

Thats what I meant in my first post when I said "I will spray Nitro under and overtop" looking back that doesnt sound very descriptive. I meant - nitro under the grain filler as a sealer and the nitro finish overtop". - Ive got maple bindings and dont want to stain them.
