I don't think the pre-wired pick guard will work with this - it is set up for 2 humbuckers - let me know if you need help when you get to that point - good luck!

I had linked this earlier in the thread as a possible suggestion
http://www.guitarfetish.com/Wired-Strat ... p_896.html

He's at the stage now where he needs to route for the control cavities and drill/route for the pickup and jack leads. Probably best to wait until you have the pickguard and bridge to finalize those things.

Get the bridge located and then locate the pickguard, then plan your routing from there.

In my experience, the angle of the neck, if present, has more to do with the type of bridge you're going to use rather than it being bolted on or glued in. I worked on a friends guitar who had a bolt on neck with a bigsby tremolo and floating bridge. The person who built this guitar did not take bridge height into consideration when installing the neck, and as a result, the action was way too high no matter how low you set the bridge. And to my surprise, when I took off the neck, there was even a piece of paper in the neck pocket helping to angle it to a small degree (obviously not enough). If there was a money involved in fixing his guitar, I would've re-routed the neck pocket and then filled and re-drilled the holes in the neck. But since it was a more casual tune up, I simply put thicker paper into the neck pocket (not the real way to fix this but it worked okay).

There's definitely ergonomics to consider when installing a neck. It's definitely easiest to keep the neck pocket flat, however if you have a floating bridge, which is typically quite a bit taller than hardtails, to make the neck high enough for decent action to be possible, your neck might be sticking way out of the body, and trust me, that typically makes a very ugly and awkward to play instrument.

So the better way to do that scenario is to route for a slight angle of the neck. This works fine with bolt on guitars as well as set necks. The result is much cleaner and easier to play.

That's my two cents

Does anyone one have a template or a drawing to help me locate the Main cavity and the jack cavity for the Strat I am building . ( 2 ) Humbuckers . I really didnt want to spend money on a template since I probably wont build to many Electrics .

i've made strat type jack holes( :D ) using a drill and chisels. its kinda a pain. but Fender just does a deep oval hole. the lip of the jack plate should cover the edges of the cavity, so it is not rocket science, i'd just draw the outine of the jack plate and start digging.
as far as control cavities, again, the pickguard will cover it all, so again, just approximate. if you have a pickguard, then that is your template.... Fender routed out either one big "swimming pool", or 3 individual cavities for the pickups, joined by a wiring channel.
most bolt on necks benefit from a small shim in the neck pocket; i like to use sheet aluminum flashing. doesn't take much thickness to get it dialed it. most Strats have an allen screw tilt adjust. photos courtesy of Stew Mac. i believe Musikraft will also show pics.

You,re welcome, Wud!
As for the beer, i don't drink alcohol. Doesn't matter though. You don't owe me anything. This forum and the people on it have helped me out so many times I can't even count. I'm glad to be able to give a little back.

Wicked cool piece of burl!
As to binding, I've seen several bound strats. Looks to me like the biggest concern would be how to bind around the forearm contour. But I have seen it done(don't know how). I've also seen a lot of bound strats without the forearm contour. I think it's a cool look, although there are "purists" for lack of a better word, that think binding doesn't belong on a strat. pfft

Very nice piece of wood.
Just carve the contour
and miter the bidings.
Gonna be sweet!
Just don't sand that top much more.

I sat and looked at this top last night for a while and decided I am changing direction on this a lil bit ..... If i use the prewired Black pickguard most of the burl will get covered .... sooo im thinking of routing a pocket from the back and just holes for the knob shafts in the lower bout in the clear area ...... then using a " clear " lexan pickguard . That way the entire burl should show nicely .

What do you think ?

I would nix even the lexan and just use as much as the back real estate as possible to make it happen!

I'd probably skip the lexan. IMHO, with a good enough finish, there won't be a need for one. Of course I'm not a fan of pickguards in general. I don't have one on my Cornerstone acoustic, my LP copy, or the telecaster I built idunno

On the control cavity thats no prob , I can aslo use a amp plug on the edge of the guitar , so that leaves the humbucker holes and some trim rings . Soooo you dont feel that even a thin clear pickguard is necess?

Or maybe the stickon sheet pickguard people use on acoustics , cut to fit a small area ?
