Hi Bruce, I just got back from the Hospital where I spent the night with my 3 year old; he has a respiratory problem that got pretty bad last night. He is better now, and we are both back home. Getting ready to build a Lego fire engine... We are both pretty exhausted; hopefully we'll get some real sleep soon

Arnt, glad all is well. I feel your pain as my oldest daughter spent several nights in the ER for the same reason. Nothing worse that seeing a little kid not being able to breathe. Still makes me shiver.
If you don't have one already, you might look into getting a nebulizer with albuteral. It saved us many a trip to the hospital.

Yeah, I got a Lego guy too. I feel for you. May God touch your lives in a tangible way today.

I spent last night monitoring my oldest girl's fever. Daughter is on the mend and is painting her school shoe box project. Dad's a little bleary eyed.

Paul, I'm not familiar with the "nebulizer with albuteral", is it some sort of an inhalator? We have been using a "Babyhalor" with Ventoline but I'm not impressed with its performance. He gets his problems when he has a virus infection, and there is not much cure for the common cold. They say it will go away when he gets older so we're keeping our fingers crossed.

A nebulizer is also known as an SVN. Albuteral is the drug that goes into it. It's basically a small air compressor that bubbles through a small pot of the medicine and turns it into mist. In fact, before we got ours, I used an airbrush compresson (3psi) to do the same thing. Worked fine but was a little cumbersome.
Ask your Dr. about it. If he/she writes you a perscription, your insurance should pay for it. Well, that's in the US, not sure what your insurance system is like. Even if it's not paid for, it's well worth the investment to stay out of the ER.

Hey Arnt, what Paul said. Our youngest had a liver transplant a couple of years ago. As a result of his immuno-suppressive drugs he can gat hit pretty hard by the common cold. His older brother is much better in that regard actually (and me, I won't even take an asprin until death is knocking on the door!) Anyway, we have a nebulizer and use it for two drugs at once, Ventalin and Pulmacort. The nebulizer just atomizes the drugs so the get better infiltration and open up the airways so the little ones can breath better. It works with a mask, ours has a happy little fish on it. Turn on cartoons and they sit and watch while the drugs do there work. (Hopefully one of our resident doctors will correct all of my errors in this post!) In Canada you can rent the machines from the Pharmacy but we just bought one as we use it so often. Our littlest is 3 years also.
